Una settimana fa Greenpeace NZ ha annunciato un'altra campagna ambientalista contro la riduzione dei terreni Neo Zelandesi in Miniere.

I have spent the day traveling down the West Coast of the South island with the Sign On crew, including Robyn Malcolm - a true Westie! I swear to God this coast line is the most beautiful i have seen anywhere in the world.

We have been interviewing tourists about the part our "clean green" image played in their decision to visit our country. Then we asked them how they felt about our Government's plan to dig up 3,000 hectares of top-quality native forest in the Paparoa National Park for coal. This is stunning West Coast land that is held in trust on behalf of all NZ'ders.

Two young men from Wales warned us that mining had had a ruinous effect on their rivers and landscape. The woman from northern England said it had taken more than 50 years for the land to begin to rehabilitate. One tourist said rather desperately: "Don't do it Mr Key!!". All but one strongly advised against New Zealand taking such a backward step. I also talked to some locals (see photo of me doing my thing). Almost all these guys work, or have in the past worked at the Stockton coal mine, just North up the Coast from here. They all talked about how UGLY the mine site is and how they don't really think the same thing should be happening in a National Park.

Let's face it; they won't dig up coal just to look at it. It's going to be burnt in NZ, contributing massively to our carbon emissions. Our Government is rubbing its hands together at the thought of digging up an estimated 9 billion tonnes of coal from various locations around NZ, according to Simon Boxer of Greenpeace. That translates into 13 billion tonnes of CO2 into the air, which is over two times the annual CO2 emissions of the USA. Because of failure to cut emissions, NZ has been lambasted in the overseas press. They have said our 100% PURE brand is infact pure hype. Tourism is our second biggest industry. If our reputation gets trashed, along with our landscape, we're sunk.

We need energy, yes, but we should be demanding energy that is clean, sustainable and doesn't trash our childrens' future, nor come with a nasty carbon bill that will be footed by the taxpayer.

Mining conservation land is not ethical, not smart and not forward-thinking. In short, it's UN-KIWI! Don't do it! If you feel the same and live in or around Auckland, join us on May 1 for a march up Queen Street against the mining plans. Trust me, the Paparoa National Park is way too beautiful for that fate.

The Stockton open pit mining operation, the largest in New Zealand, is located at between 500m and 1,100m above sea level in the Buller Coalfield, 35km north of Westport on the West Coast of the South Island. The current operations are located on an extensive, moderately undulating plateau. The area experiences high rainfall of approximately 6,000mm annually, cool temperatures, considerable cloud and mist, and occasional frosts and snow.

Actors Lucy Lawless and Robyn Malcolm have launched Greenpeace's campaign against mining in national parks.

The Government plans to open up 3,000ha of previously protected land, for mining.

Ms Lawless and Ms Malcolm condemn coal mining as a Dark Ages practice that will threaten the tourist industry.
Ms Lawless launched the campaign at the Punakaiki Pancake Rocks, 50km southwest of the proposed mining sites. She asked tourists what they thought of coal mining in the Paparoa National Park – one said it would "ruin" New Zealand's legacy.

But it was Outrageous Fortune star Robyn Malcolm who fronted up to Greymouth's pro-mining mayor Tony Kokshoorn and asked why the West Coast needs more coal mines.

"New Zealand's production of coal is a drop in the bucket compared to other nations," argued Mr Kokshoorn. "Look at China and Australia, at what they produce."

Ms Malcolm countered that New Zealand is a small country that relies so much on tourism.

Mr Kokshoorn however says Greenpeace is "stirring", and the Resource Management Act will take care of the environment.

"I think they're really scaremongering the public into thinking that we're going to get our chainsaws back out, get our diggers back out and go into the bush and ruin it," he says, "but look, West Coasters do not want that, we love our rainforests, we love our environment, it's pristine."

Ms Malcolm says New Zealand needs to look to clean energy.

"When you burn coal you create emissions, which are devastating because of climate change."

Greenpeace is hoping its ambassadors will generate public support for its anti-mining campaign, which culminates in a march in Auckland on May 1.

Lucy and Robyn's close encounter with coal

It must have looked quite a sight for people driving by. An unsuspecting corner, curving gently around a quiet part of the West coast's Buller Gorge in the early morning mist. But look a little closer and....my God, that's Xena Warrior Princess and Sheryl West rubbing themselves up against a pile of coal.

This was all in aid of humouring Energy Minister Gerry Brownlee and his adoration of this dirty fossil fuel. In 2007 (yes, in the 21st century, yes, in a climate constrained world) he made a video entitled "Sexy Coal" (see 1 minute 40 seconds in for his absurd use of the adjective). So climate ambassadors Lucy Lawless and Robyn Malcolm thought they'd see for themselves if they too could experience a kind of carnal urge when coming into close contact with this common fossil fuel. Suffice to say no matter how much they channelled Gerry, they just couldn't bring themselves to get amorous towards a cold, hard planet-killer.

Later, we visited the site in the East Paparoa National Park where the Government wants to allow the mining of 3,000 hectares for low grade coal. It's beautiful Thick beech-podocarp forest, a huge variety of flora which i couldn't name if you paid me, and, according to the Government's own discussion paper on the area, a range of threatened bird species. It's just not somewhere you want to be ploughing through with a digger.

"Well, this is it," said Robyn, standing in a clearing in the proposed site. The crown jewels, just waiting to be picked and sold off by the Government.

"It's what the schedule 4 plans represent that is most concerning," she told me "It shows a Government that has turned its back on what Kiwis stand for and believe in. If they're prepared to scar our National Parks, just what aren't they prepared to do?"

Friday April 23 – West Coast - Sign On campaign ambassadors Lucy Lawless and Robyn Malcolm were at the site of a proposed coal mine in the Paparoa National Park today, drawing the link between the Government’s Schedule 4 mining plans and climate change.

The pair also spoke with tourists at Punakaiki about their views on New Zealand’s “clean green” reputation, and the role it had played in their decision to visit.

“The National Government wants to destroy 3,000 ha of the beautiful Paparoa National Park to mine coal, which will be burnt in New Zealand and will increase our emissions (1),” said Robyn Malcolm. “If dug up and burnt, the coal will produce CO2 equal to half of all New Zealand’s annual emissions.

“Their mining proposals are like something from another age,” said Malcolm. “They seem to have been hatched in a complete vacuum. They’ve taken no account of public opinion, Kiwi values and the realities of climate change.”

“I’ve spoken to a lot of tourists down here, who came to New Zealand on the basis of its natural beauty, and who think John Key would be absolutely crazy to allow this mining to go ahead,” said Lucy Lawless. “This land is held in trust on behalf of all New Zealanders. To mine it would be unethical and not smart.”

Greenpeace political adviser Geoff Keey said the schedule 4 plans were just the tip of the iceberg in terms of the Government’s hopes for a fossil fuel boom. “We are facing a new era of dirty coal under this Government, at a time when the world is moving to find alternatives due to climate change.

“Overall mining plans under National (including coal outside of Schedule 4) could see up to 9 billion tonnes of coal mined - leading to some 13 billion tonnes of carbon dioxide from burning – over two times the annual CO2 emissions of the USA.

“This would blow out New Zealand’s emissions, undermine our clean, green reputation and leave the taxpayer holding the carbon bill. This is a 19th century economic vision that will damage the New Zealand economy in the 21st century.”

“The mining is indicative of a bigger issue facing New Zealand,” said Malcolm. “There is a fast-growing, new way of viewing future economic growth and development. The economic leaders in the 21st century will be those who use new clean, green technology as a way to move forward while protecting what little untouched world we have left.

“Unfortunately our Government does not seem to have grasped this.”

Actresses come Greenpeace ambassadors Lucy Lawless and Robyn Malcolm visited Paparoa National Park on the West Coast of the South Island yesterday to protest against the Government's proposal to mine 3000ha of the park. The pair spoke to tourists about the effect mining would have on New Zealand's clean, green image and the impact mining coal could have on the country's carbon emissions. Greenpeace political adviser Geoff Keey said the plans were just the tip of the iceberg in terms of the Government's hopes for a fossil-fuel boom.

Marcia del primo maggio contro le Miniere in Nuova Zelanda

Il Primo Maggio molti Neo Zelandesi marceranno per dire al Governo Neo Zelandese di non creare miniere nelle aree naturali di questo bellissimo paese.

Documentario: A Dirty Business(Sulle conseguenze delle miniere di Carbone)


Questo documentario si intitola: Dirty Business. E' un video di 45 minuti che mostra gli effetti e le conseguenze che le miniere di carbone in Australia hanno sull'ambiente e sulla salute della gente che ci abita vicino.
In questo video vedrete come vengono distrutti ettari e ettari di terra per creare queste miniere, rovinando i territori e i paesaggi naturali, e vedrete anche attraverso le testimonianze della gente e dei medici quali sono le conseguenze delle polveri che si sollevano dalle miniere, causando malattie respiratorie quali: Asma, Allergie, problemi cardiaci, malattie renali e in casi gravi anche il cancro. Le persone più a rischio sono i bambini e le persone anziane. Inoltre sembra che il Governo Australiano non ascolti gli appelli della gente e continua a distruggere quei territori e causare malattie, tutto per soldi e ricchezze.
Questo video vi fa vedere del perchè sia così importante la campagna di Sign On(il video non è di Sign On Greenpeace, però mostra esattamente cosa fanno le miniere), e del perchè sia importante appoggiarla e parteciparvi il più possibile. Qui c'è in gioco non solo il paesaggio naturale Neo Zelandese, ma anche la salute di coloro che ci vivono.

aaah, finalmente dopo giorni di studio è sabato. almeno ho 2 minuti per leggere le news. Sono felicissima di questa iniziativa. :D ero certa che Lucy avrebbe partecipato Grazie!

Prego Ludo, è un piacere

Comunque dopo aver visto quel video di 45 minuti mi sono veramente resa conto della devastazione che provocano.
Con delle gru e scavatrici giganti creano dei crateri enormi quanto quelli causati da meteoriti.
E tutto ciò che resta di quelle terre meravigliose australiane è carbone nero, che viene raccolto in camion e portato a farlo raffinare, e quando quello finisce, non rimane nulla.
E probabilmente per ripiantare alberi, foreste e tutto il resto ci vorranno anni e anni.
La polvere che fuoriesce dal Carbone poi è pericolosissima.
Vi ricordate tempo fa che in Australia si sono risvegliati con il cielo rosso?
Ecco, il rosso veniva dalla polvere sollevata dal Carbone, trasformata in Anidride Carbonica mischiata a sabbia e terra, e trasportata dal vento.
Quella polvere provoca Asma, Allergie, malattie cardiache, Infezioni renali e Cancro.
E' davvero assurdo.
Questa causa è davvero nobile, e spero che Greenpeace e tutti quelli che ci lavorano come Lucy, Robyn ecc, abbiano successo, il primo Maggio con quella marcia.
La Nuova Zelanda è un paese meraviglioso: perchè rovinarla solo per far soldi?

senza voler essere polemica, credo che prima di fare queste proteste sia necessario prima liberarsi del bisogno che abbiamo del carbone. sarebbe come dire che dobbiamo chiudere i pozzi di petrolio perche' causano disastri natutali e avidita' incurabile nell'uomo. giustissimo, ma finche' abbiamo bisogno di benzina i pozzi esisteranno. stesso discorso per le miniere.
credo sarebbe meglio impegnarsi nel promuovere fonti di energia alternative e modificare radicalmente il nostro stile di vita. quando le miniere non saranno piu' necessarie a nessuno verra' in mente di mettersi a scavare e fare guai di questa portata

Si Concordo, ma la deforestazione non è una soluzione ragionevole.
E distruggere ettari di terre e foreste pluviali causando danni all'ambiente e alle persone nemmeno.
Per l'energia alternativa però sono d'accordo.
Io appoggio questa iniziativa, perchè nessuno vuole vedere la NZ diventare una terra desolata.
E' una terra stupenda e se la gente va li a visitarla è proprio per i bei paesaggi naturali.

Consiglio comunque a tutti di guardare questo video, anche se non sapete l'inglese, basta solo guardarlo, sentire cosa dice la gente, i medici e tutto il resto e rendersi conto di quanto sia grave il problema.
Possiamo dire che non ci riguarda perchè è lontano da noi, ma non è vero.
Riguarda tutti, e al diavolo il potere e i soldi, qui stiamo parlando del nostro pianeta e della gente che ci vive. Se non facciamo qualcosa ora, altro che 2012.
