New Zealand plans to mine itself to destruction
You know it’s serious when you get an email from Xena Warrior Princess herself, so I paid attention the other day when I saw I had a message from Lucy Lawless. How she got my email address is perhaps as much of a mystery as the success of her show, but Lawless’ message, in collaboration with New Zealand actress Robyn Malcom (who I think was the chick who played Minnie’s Mum on Shortland Street), was to raise awareness of the New Zealand National-led government’s plan to open up 7058 hectares of highly protected conservation land and national parks — including World Heritage Sites — to mining companies.
You can watch Lawless and Malcolm’s attached satire of morbidly obese Energy Minister Gerry Brownlee’s “sexy coal” comment here, which proves that Lawless would still definitely get one, but more importantly is part of a massive response from the New Zealand public which culminated in the “biggest protest march in living memory” earlier this month (Saturday, May 1st).
