The actress who plays the slave Mira talks about her experiences on the show, becoming a series regular next season and more

The pay-cable network Starz is certainly on a roll lately with its brand new original series Spartacus: Blood and Sand receiving critical raves, increasing ratings and also a second-season order on the network, which will likely debut in early 2011. One of the new faces on the series is the lovely Katrina Law, who first appeared as the enslaved Mira on the ninth episode of the season entitled Whore. She has since appeared in every episode of the series, including the season finale, Kill Them All, which airs tonight, April 16 at 10 PM ET on Starz. I had the chance to speak with this talented young actress over the phone about her character and overall experiences on the show. Here's what she had to say.

Can you just talk a bit about how you came to the series and what your first reaction of your character Mira was?

Katrina Law: I had originally done a production called The Resistance. It was one of those underground guerilla things, very low budget. Then Starz and Ghost House ended up picking it up and funding it and we reshot it. When the part of Mira came up, they thought of me and asked me to audition for it. I guess it all just went from there. My initial reaction to Mira was I was very excited that Starz had asked me to audition for it, but there was also a lot of nudity involved. Being a little bit of a shy person myself, it was a little scary to take that on. They sent me over the trailer, and as soon as I saw it, I knew it was something I wanted to be a part of. It was so gorgeous and the way it was shot was beautiful and everybody looked fantastic, ancient Rome. Yeah, I wanted to be a part of it.

Had any of the episodes premiered then when you first signed on?

Katrina Law: No. I came on board in August of 2009 and by the time we finished it was November and then it aired in January. The only thing I had really seen was that trailer, but just going off of (executive producers) Rob Tapert's and Sam Raimi's reputation, I knew I was in good hands at Starz.

For those who might not be that familiar with the show, can you talk a bit about your character Mira and what she brings to the show?

Katrina Law: Mira is a slave in the House of Batiatus (John Hannah). She's definitely one of the stronger characters. She's not shy, she's street smart. Her background is a bit unknown as of now, but I'm sure that's going to be developed in Season 2. She flies under the radar because she's smart enough to know to keep her head down low and she can probably get by without getting beaten or noticed by her owners and, hopefully, she'll just be able to do her thing as relatively peaceful as she possibly can.

I understand that you will be a series regular in Season 2. When you had first signed on, was that a possibility or had they mentioned that to you before?

Katrina Law: They did. It was a possibility but, I guess the crazy thing and the fun thing about this show is that pretty much everybody has a target on their back. Yes, they do cover their bases and will sign you up for multiple seasons, but that doesn't mean that you're going to survive (Laughs). So I didn't know if I was going to make it past Season 1 or not. I mean, I am, but it was just as much a surprise to me as it was to anybody else.

Can you just describe a day on the set? What's it like working with Andy Whitfield and the rest of this great cast?

Katrina Law: Well, a regular day on set involves of a lot of really buff men dressed in diapers, walking around (Laughs) and lots of slaves and gorgeous costumes. No, working with Andy is amazing. He is so giving and, for somebody being the name of the show, the man has no ego, no attitude. He's so giving and willing to work on every scene, break down every line and do take after take after take so not only he's satisfied, but the other actors, the director and the crew are satisfied. I couldn't ask for a better person to work with. Lucy (Lawless) is just amazing. I want to be her. She's my new hero (Laughs). On the acting front, she's so giving, she's so solid and daring in her choices and she's so comfortable in what she's doing. It's one of the best things, as a young actor, you want to strive to have that freedom and validity in your movements, words and actions. Off set, she's so chill and down-to-earth and it's so nice to see that someone who's had so much success in this business, is all smiles and friendly to everyone. She says please and thank you just like every normal human being should and it's just really nice to see that. It's actually a dream job. Everybody on set is amazing. There is nobody that I can possibly even try to complain about. Everybody is just so gorgeous.

Your character just premiered a few weeks ago on the show. I was curious if you've had any fan interactions, just out in public, that recognize you from the show, or any other responses you've gotten from the show so far?

Katrina Law: Well, just yesterday, I had my first, I guess you could say "sighting." It's never happened before and it was my waiter. He came up to me and said he loved the show and we started talking about it. I looked at my friend who was sitting next to me and said, 'Did you tell him to say that?' (Laughs) It was a little bizarre and I think he was pretty happy to learn that he was the first person to recognize me on the street, so we had a little bonding moment and that was pretty cool. Then I was at the gym today and I had three people come up to me. So far, everybody has been really pleasant and really nice and just huge fans of the show. Everybody was asking about Andy and how he was doing, so it's nice to know that people are being entertained and nice. It's a bizarre world to be walking into, but it's not that bad (Laughs).

Yeah. I hear the ratings keep going up with every episode so it seems this is developing quite a following.

Katrina Law: Well, it's an addicting show. I was talking to my fiancée the other day and I was saying, 'You know, if I wasn't a part of this show, I would be dying for an audition to get onto this show,' and even if I didn't get a chance to do that, I would still be watching it. As you know, we didn't have a pilot, we just went right into production, so a lot of the kinks that we had to work out in the beginning, we had to work out while we were filming. Now, it's just found its legs and it's running. The characters are amazing and all the actors portray the characters so well. The writing, oh my God, Steven S. DeKnight is great. I definitely think it's a worthy show to get the ratings.

The season finale is coming up and I was wondering if there was anything you could tease us with, about either your character or the storyline as a whole?

Katrina Law: Well, a lot of people have been questioning whether or not Mira's loyalty to Spartacus is real or not, and whether she is going to betray him or stand by his side. You're going to get a pretty clear indication of where she stands in this episode.

The show was renewed for a second season already. I was curious when you were going to be getting back to work and starting production on the second season?

Katrina Law: Right now, pretty much everything is a rumor, so it's hard to try and spread more rumors, but from what I... well, OK, I'm going to spread a rumor (Laughs). From what I'm hearing right now, it's September. That's the most solid indication that I've gotten.

Would the second season probably have the same kind of schedule then, with the season premiering in January?

Katrina Law: I think so, I think so. It's one of those things where I have nothing to do with that end, I have no influence over it, so I just kind of sit here and wait like everybody else. Tell me what to do, and I'll do it.

You have a few other films in the works right now. Can you tell us any more about Mafiosa? It sounds like a really interesting project.

Katrina Law: Yeah. Mafiosa was written by Veronica Russo. It's her first time making a film and I'm really proud of her because this woman has a full-time job and she decided one day, 'You know, I want to write a film and I want to make it.' Within a year, she had the entire film written, cast, got it produced, got it made and is now in the final stages of putting it together. She did this all within a year and this isn't her job, she's never done this before, and she has a regular job on top of that. It's just a huge accomplishment. Making a film from start to finish in under a year is pretty much unheard of, especially someone who isn't even in California and doesn't really have anything to do with the industry. I'm sure when she looks back on it, there will be things that she would've wanted to change and whatnot, but it's just really inspiring to see somebody do that from the ground up, just say, 'You know, I want to do this,' and do it.

Wow. That's pretty amazing. Can you tell us a little bit about your character in that film?

Katrina Law: I play the friend of the lead character and I help her figure out what's going on with her family and the whole history of it. I help her make some decisions about what to do about it. Basically, I'm kind of the voice of reason. I guess that's the best way to put it.

Is there anything else that you're looking to sign onto now?

Katrina Law: Right now, everything is kind of up in the air. I don't want to jinx anything so I'll just keep it hush-hush. I do have The Resistance coming out and that will be out soon, that web series that basically got me onto Starz. I'm looking forward to that. It's a pretty cool piece.

Will that be airing on the Starz website or where will that be on?

Katrina Law: I'm not exactly sure right now. I've heard rumors, but I don't think I have the luxury of saying right now. Things could change. We should find out next week or the week after that.

Finally, what would you like to say to the fans of Spartacus: Blood and Sand about what they can expect from the premiere and from your work in the future?

Katrina Law: For the fans of Spartacus: Blood and Sand, I think they need to tune into the season finale at 10 PM. It's going to be a doozy. They're going to see everything that they want to see and it's going to be a very satisfying episode for a lot of people. I think it's also going to be a great cliffhanger to lead you into Season 2 and I know that Steven S. DeKnight and his crazy team of writers are in the process of writing Season 2 and, from what I'm hearing, it's going to top Season 1. I think everyone should be really excited.

Excellent. Well, that's all I have for you, Katrina. Thanks so much for your time, and best of luck with all your new projects.

Katrina Law: Oh, thank you so much and thank you for taking the time to interview me.

You can watch the lovely Katrina Law as Mira in the Season 1 finale of Spartacus: Blood and Sand, which airs tonight, Friday, April 16 at 10 PM ET only on Starz.
