Citazione :
Spartacus Episode Review Season 1 Episode 11 - Old Wounds Written by MaryD

Spartacus struggles with a fellow gladiator's death. The Magistrate is declared missing as Batiatus and Numerius begin the search for him

Favourite Quote: "He will be remembered as a husband, a father and a friend amongst enemies..." Spartacus to Doctore

Spartacus is mourning the death of Varro in a big way. Varro's body is delivered to his mourning wife and Spartacus can't focus on anything. The wound to his side is worrying him and Crixus taunts him.

Meanwhile other plans are afoot. We had Batiatus The Clueless last episode and this episode we get Batiatus The Ruthless..he's baaacck! I do love ruthless Batty. John Hannah is INCREDIBLE. Batiatus the clueless drives me crazy. Batiatus the Ruthless makes me cheer (something is very wrong here but who cares, I love this show!)

You had to wonder since the last episode when the Magistrate basically ignored the first rule of hospitality...don't diss the friend who invited you to their home and don't kill their gladiators (there is a list like that right? If there isn't, there should be). He basically ate, drank and allowed his son to kill. Not a nice thing to do at someone's home.

Oh you can bet your last Roman coin that Batty doesn't give a flying toss if Varro is dead. Nope that's not what he got so worked up about. Varro was a gladiator and that's all he was. He was a slave.

Batiatus doesn't care about slaves; you just had to see the way he ruthlessly killed Barca. No this was much more personal. The Magistrate, poor sod, did something more injurious than just kill a gladiator. He hurt poor Batty's pride. As Batiatus took great delight in repeating the Magistrate's words back to him; the very words that sealed the poor guy's fate:

"Leave politics to the men who have the breeding for it..."

You know by this stage the Magistrate should steal a clue that he is not coming out of this in a healthy state but noooo he continues to dig a big hole for himself when he says...

"I only thought to spare you further humiliation!"

Oh man, are you in serious poop or what?! He rightly gets his head kicked in by an enraged Batiatus. In all of the violence directed at the man, there is a tiny bit of humour that did indeed made me chuckle and it was delivered by none other than Ashur Good Twin. Suggesting that the Magistrate would be able to reply to Batiatus' accusations if he took his foot off the man's throat...well that does usually allow someone to talk <g> Okay back to Ruthless Batiatus without Ashur's comic relief...

Okay so now you've had the crap beaten out of you, what do you do? You try and make nice with the bully who beat you right? Of course you do. What does the silly magistrate do? He insults Batiatus...man, stop digging, you're going to end up in China! Seriously now, stop digging! Too late.

What's really surprising about this scene is Ashur. Remember ruthless, evil Ashur? Well someone must have slipped him something because he suddenly has a heart and tries to get Batiatus to show mercy?! This must be Ashur's good twin because it's the same dude who ruthlessly sold out Barca. Someone send out a search party for Ashur The Evil Twin...good twin is boring.

Batiatus tells him "We're committed". Yeah. Right. Wow Batiatus is totally off the rails here...wounded pride and all.

Meanwhile back at the Ludus Spartacus is going a little crazy. His grief over Varro's death brings some unusual visions. It's not surprising he would be in mourning for his friend. As he said to Doctore

"He will be remembered as a husband, a father and a friend amongst enemies..."

Varro was more than Sparty's friend. He was a brother. That wound is deep and I don't see it being healed any time soon. Spartacus is out of commission due to his injury being infected which leads Batiatus to give Crixus a chance to prove himself once again.

I'm not sure if a 2x4 across the back of the head would give Crixus a real clue that he is second choice to fight Pericles and only fights because Spartacus is out of commission. I did enjoy the chat between Naevia and Crixus. She does the long suffering girlfriend so well <g> I love Naevia's spunk; I do. Crixus needs someone like her in his life. Crixus on this occasion actually stops puffing out his chest long enough to show her some gentleness and soothes her worried mind. Awww. There is hope yet.

Away from the love birds...Ashur Evil Twin has been found! Yeay! Oh Solonios you poor Sod #2...run man, run! I wonder if Solonios realises that he is meeting with Ashur Evil Twin? Probably not..ah well.

We next go back to the Ludus where Spartacus is in the middle of a fever and some very strange things happen likes money coming out his wound....very disturbing imagery...with Varro saying "This is what you are to him..." Next is a woman coming out of the water with a mask with blood coming out of her eyes and mouth...Sura. Poor dying Sura.

Back to the Arena where Crixus is getting a welcome from the crowd that he didn't expect. Aww poor Crixus. He is getting booed and rotten fruit is thrown at him much to Lucretia and Naevia's disgust. I think I've figured out Doctore as well. Does he believe Crixus is the true champion of Capua or does he think that by playing to Crixus' pride that he would get the best out of him? I believe the latter.

Smart (and extremely cute) man that Doctore.

Young Numerious seems to want Crixus to kill Pericles; what a departure from the last episode but then his birthday present must be a distant memory by now..she's gone back to Rome.

Lucretia and Naevia have near heart attacks during Crixus' battle with Pericles...Lucretia mysteriously nearly falls over as she goes to stand to cheer for Crixus...hmm I wonder if all her baby making activities has finally paid off. Interesting. It's either that, too much wine or a very big red herring from wicked Steven <g>

Crixus gives Pericles a gut wrenching send off (sorry, I couldn't resist). He is disappointed when he looks up and doesn't see Naevia but a kill is a kill, right Crixus? He is once again the victor and going to be insufferable once he gets over Naevia not watching the disembowelment of poor Pericles.

Batiatus stops gloating long enough to set his plan in motion for the poor Magistrate. Off he goes in search for the missing Magistrate with Numerious by his side. Meanwhile Ashur Evil Twin goes to Solonios to tell him about Batiatus' treachery. Oh dear. Ashur leads Solonios to where the Magistrate is being kept...

Meanwhile back at the Ludus, Spartacus is in one of his fever dreams...and this time Spartacus sees himself dead. The same self (that sounds odd) he killed in the Arena in episode 7 "Great and Unfortunate Things" where he decided to lay down his resistance and stop being a Thracian to being Spartacus, Gladiator. Creepy. He then sees Sura where she asks "Why did you kill him?"

"A man must accept his fate..." Spartacus

"or be destroyed by it..." Sura

"You have always been destined for great and unfortunate things..." Sura again.

We next see Sura dying in Spartacus' arms again...and Varro telling him he must tend to the wound...he sees the driver telling Batiatus about the attack, we then see the blood on his hands and a wound, Figment Varro as a Roman soldier pushes him into the room where the driver is enjoying the pleasures of the women and Sura...who says...tend to the wound...
Spartacus has an epiphany (and his fever breaks)! The driver has no wound..he wasn't attacked..oh dear...Spartacus asks Mira to release him. I fear for the driver's health.

Ashur Evil Twin and Solonios is on their way to finding the Magistrate to free him before Batiatus can kill him. Just as they arrive Ashur gets an attack of the scaredy cat about him and flees. Solonios you silly silly man. He discovers that the Magistrate is dead...way way dead with his throat cut. Unfortunately for Solonious he is holding a dagger...slit throat, dagger...Numerous coming round the corner and finding his dead father..

oh dear Solonios just booked his debut in the Arena.

Ashur Evil Twin is right beside Batiatus with an evil smirk on his face. That was shifty, nasty and just plain evil. Deliciously evil.

Back at the Ludus Spartacus kills the driver but not before the driver tells him what we all knew...Batiatus The Ruthless Version killed his wife. Mira helps Spartacus cover up the death. Batiatus believes the driver died of his wounds and Sparty is off the hook.

Batiatus sees a very healthy Spartacus and asks him if he is well.

"Yes Dominos, I am my self again."

Oh yeah the Thracian is back!

Qui c'è un'altra review dell'episodio da TV.com
Citazione :

Review: Spartacus: Blood and Sand – s01e11 – Old Wounds

Old Wounds – Doctore (Peter Mensah) tries to comfort a very distraught Spartacus (Andy Whitfield) over the loss of his best friend. Varro's (Jai Courtney) sword cut deeper than thought and Spartacus' wound still bleeds. On the balcony, Batiatus (John Hannah) rants to Lucretia (Lucy Lawless) about Calavius' (John Bach) treatment of him during the Magistrate Games. He is also extremely angry that Calavius conceded to his son Numerius' (Lliam Powell) demand that Spartacus kill Varro. Lucretia overhears Batiatus speaking to a guard who tells him that they have captured Calavius and Ashur (Nick Tarabay) is standing guard underground.

Poor Spartacus, still he grieves and no one can comfort him. He falls into a coma, during which he hallucinates about Varro. It pained me to watch his hallucinations play out, but soon they lead him to avenge his beloved Sura's death. This was, by far, the most emotional episode to date. I didn't think anything could top last week's Party Favors, but this one certainly did. Now that Spartacus knows the truth, the big question is what will he do with it?

Underground, Batiatus stands before Calavius and angrily explains why he's there trussed up like a pig. Stupidly, Calavius provokes Batiatus further, telling him "You are beneath me, and you always will be, in this life and the next." A fired-up Batiatus tells him he has plans not only for him, but for Numerius as well. Bravo to Batiatus! Not only is he avenging Varro's death on behalf of Spartacus, but he is finally dealing with the so-called elite who constantly put him down. I cheered in delight!

The crowds have become unruly awaiting Spartacus' fight against Perocles in the primus. After Calavius' wife instructs Batiatus to begin, he announces to a deeply disappointed crowd Crixus will be fighting instead. Even though Crixus is not my favorite character, I eagerly watched as he fought. This is, after all, his big return after being wounded by Theocoles and losing his title as champion. As they battle, Crixus appears to be defeated but like a true champion, he rises and defeats his opponent in true gladiator fashion. Now the crowd cheers wildly, roaring his name, "Crixus! Crixus!"

As Batiatus, the Magistrate of Pompeii, Calavius' wife and son go off to enjoy a celebratory drink, a guard brings Batiatus a note that Calavius' caravan has been found, his guards murdered and Calavius missing. Batiatus, along with Numerius, takes off in search of the missing Calavius.

Ashur has always been quite the schemer and in Old Wounds, he is no different. His manipulation, luring Solonius into the cisterns that run beneath the city, is flawless. He sets him up perfectly to be with Calavius just as Batiatus and Numerius 'find' him.

When Spartacus comes out of his coma, the guard who was responsible for Sura's death lies next to him. What happens after Spartacus questions the guard? Does the guard tell and if so, what next? How will Spartacus avenge his wife's murder? And what is to become of Calavius, Solonius and Numerius? I am also wondering about the relationship between Spartacus and Mira. Or is there a relationship? She certainly 'has eyes' for Spartacus, but does Spartacus reciprocate, or has he just been using her all this time? All good questions to be answered in the coming episodes. Spartacus is one of the most riveting dramas I've seen in a long time. Gripping and intense, I eagerly await what is to unfold.

Un'altra bella review su questo sito:

Citazione :
“Spartacus: Blood And Sand” Episode 11 Aired On Friday

Los Angeles, Apr 3, (THAINDIAN NEWS) The 11th episode of “Spartacus: Blood and Sand” Season 1 directed by Glenn Standring aired on April 2 evening on Starz Network. The episode titled “Old Wounds” focuses on Spartacus’ real wounds which he incurred during his fight with Varro. This wound caused him so much pain that Spartacus almost became insane. The episode also shows Batiatus’ concern for Spartacus when he takes revenge on an old enemy named Magistrate Calavius.

Spartacus has almost gone mad after killing his warrior friend Varro. He is so much affected that he begins seeing the dead man’s ghost. Waking up from a bad dream, Spartacus confesses to Varro’s wife Aurelia that it is he who is responsible for her husband’s death. On the other hand, Meera comes in to help Spartacus come out of his hallucination. She is then warned by him not to sleep with other men. Meanwhile Batiatus is shown planning a revenge against his enemies in Pompeii. For this he has to kidnap Calavius. Calavius is found dead at the end of episode 11 as a result of Batiatus’ shrewd scheme.

Overall the episode was very good and one has to admit that the series is getting better by the day. “Spartacus: Blood And Sand” will surely keep the viewers riveted to their seats chiefly on account of its excellent use of special effects. The scenes which show him hallucinating about Varro are worth watching. The dialogue too is funny and outstanding. In this 11th episode, we watch Spartacus mourning the death of his gladiator friend, and when he gets to know that the magistrate is officially missing, his son Numerius and also Batiatus go searching for him.

Four and a half Torches (Out of Five)

Warning: The following review contains spoilers for the “Old Wounds” episode of Spartacus: Blood and Sand.

After last week’s devastating episode, fans of Starz’ epic gladiator series were starting to squirm, wondering just how long we could take this. Week after week, something unbelievably awful happens to Spartacus and the rest of the gladiator’s in Batiatus’ ludus, which, given the body count, is the last place on earth you would ever want to be.

And week after week, the cunning and wicked Batiatus, as well as his equally cunning and wicked wife Lucretia and servant Ashur, always come out on top, with Spartacus believing his master to be a good, caring, and helpful man.

So how satisfying that finally — finally – we get a bit of a turnaround. Spartacus finally catches wind of what’s going on, and ironically he does this in an episode where he is the least proactive, at least physically. Spartacus spends much of the ep in a fever-induced dream, which allows his subconscious to piece together clues and deduce Batiatus’ treachery.

With our hero sidelined, the action is played out by Crixus, who regains some of his former self when battling an opponent in the arena, and Batiatus, whose plot of revenge against the Magistrate who insulted him and his rival Solonius finally comes to fruition.
The show has certainly moved away from insane, 300-style action sequences in favor of palace intrigue, and I’m okay with that, especially when the plot becomes as riveting as it was in “Old Wounds.” Having definitively proven that no character is safe, the writers keep you on the edge of your seat, because the audience knows the plot can spin in a whole new direction in seconds.

For example, the moment where Lucretia starts to swoon while watching Crixus fight in the arena was captivating because we know it can mean any number of things. Is she moved at seeing Crixus in fighting form again? Could she, at long last, be pregnant? At this point in the series, I wouldn’t have been surprised if someone had poisoned her wine and she dropped dead right there. The entire show is swiftly becoming the final scene in Hamlet.

While I applaud the writers for daring once again to tread where few other shows will in their gleeful dispatching of beloved characters, I do wonder if we’re supposed to get attached to anyone, since they all live their lives in a crosshairs. I miss those who have died: Barca, Pietros, Sura, Varro … and while I enjoy the new batch of characters, I just don’t know if I can open myself up to them emotionally.

I’ve been hurt before, you see.

All in all, “Old Wounds” was an engaging episode, with perhaps the most exciting denouement the show has had yet. I can’t wait to see what happens next.

Spartacus: Blood and Sand" 1.11 Recap: Old Wounds

by
Tim OLeary

April 4, 2010

This week's episode of Spartacus: Blood and Sand relied a great deal on the "hallucinatory dream" plot device as a way for the writers to convey important information to the protagonist that he otherwise might not be able to get. In the hands of lame writers — usually on soap operas or bad movie thrillers — this plot device is highly annoying and a sign of lazy writing.

But in the hands of good writers, the hallucinatory dream can be very effective. The writers of Spartacus are good writers. I'd even say very good.

Ever since Batiatus was revealed as having arranged the death of Sura back in Episode Six, we've known that Spartacus, who mistakenly believes Batiatus is a good guy, would have to learn the truth about Batiatus' villainy. The question was how he would learn it and the answer turns out to be through fevered dreams brought on by the small infected wound Varro inflicted during their fake fight last week.

This week both Varro and Sura repeatedly warn Spartacus to "tend to the wound" and that advice eventually leads Spartacus to the truth, although not in the way one might expect.

So why does the dream device work so well here? Partly because the writers set up its use from the very beginning of the series way back in Episode One when Sura told him to watch out for a red serpent of which the god's had sent her a vision during her dreams. Of course, a red serpent did in fact later appear at a pivotal moment.
The device also works because it's well-established that the Ancient Romans relied heavily on signs from the gods — such as dreams — to try to divine what the future might hold. So what might seem lame happening in 2010 seems plausible because it was a common belief at the time.

The device also worked because everything Spartacus saw in his dreams was reflected in his actual life, something the writers used to great effect via red herrings so that when we thought we understood what "wound" Spartacus needed to tend, we didn't at all. Was it the wound on his side? The wound that is Batiatus? Or something else entirely?

Read on to find out!

We begin with Varro laid out on a slab, all grey and corpse-y. Spartacus stares at the body of his friend (whom he killed), and is comforted a bit by Pit Guy who tells Sparty "yeah, it's a bummer, but chill because he died with honor." Spartacus is super pissed and points out Varro died as a child's plaything and wants to make sure he is remembered for being a good man, instead of a gladiator.

Spoiler:

non mi sono piaciute nemmeno le immagini smarmellate e virate sul blu dei sogni di spartacus. mi sono ormai abituata alla palette di colori calda che hanno scelto generalmente per le immagini e trovarmi il blu mi infastidisce un po'.
